Obituary for Tennis Sturgell

Elder Tennis Sturgell, age 80, of Quincy, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his residence, Friday, November 10, 2017, after a brief illness.

He was born April 30, 1937, in Floyd County, Kentucky, a son of the late Walk and Ruby Hall Sturgell.

Tennis worked for the Ford Motor Company in Lorain, Ohio as an Inventory Control Specialist. During that time he and Nancy lived in South Amherst, Ohio where they raised their five children. After 30 years with Ford, Tennis retired and he and Nancy moved from Ohio to Kentucky. After being baptized and set aside for the Lord’s work in March of 1972, Tennis went on to serve as an ordained minister in various Old Regular Baptist churches across the region. He enjoyed preaching, hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, caring for his family home in Quincy, and especially spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Cecil Sturgell, Carlos Sturgell, Donnie Sturgell, Merlene Howell and Roberta Fredrick.

Tennis is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Manning Sturgell; two sons, David Sturgell and his wife Cindy of LaGrange, Ohio, Daniel Sturgell and his wife Amy of Belton, Texas; three daughters, Barbara Dzur and husband Doug of Peculiar, Missouri, Cynthia King of Quincy, Kentucky, and Sarah Collison and her husband Jim of Bellevue, Nebraska; 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister, Teleda Mullins of Michigan; and three brothers, Palmer Sturgell of Kansas City, Missouri, Winfred Sturgell of Xenia, Ohio and Nick Sturgell of Beaver Creek, Ohio. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Globe Family Funeral Chapel in Garrison, Kentucky with Elder Paul Mathews officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Mary Cemetery in Maxey Flats in Morehead, Kentucky.

Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Globe Family Funeral Chapel, 103 Dudley Avenue, Garrison, Kentucky 41141.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
