Obituary for James E. "Jim" Barker

Mr. James E. “Jim” Barker, age 86, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday morning, August 8, 2018, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky, with loved ones by his side.

He was born March 5, 1932, in Carter County, Kentucky, a son of the late Noah and Mary Lee Barker.

Jim was retired from the U.S. Postal Service having served for 39 years. He was in many civic and philanthropic organizations serving proudly in the Olive Hill Masonic Lodge #629, until his death, being the oldest living Past Master, El Hasa Shrine and several affiliated organizations. Jim was a member of the Olive Hill American Legion Post # 138, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Area Community Development for 40 years serving as Chairman of the Board for 25 years. Jim was a member of the Olive Hill Historical Society and also served on its Board of Directors. He was on the Zoning Committee for the city of Olive Hill. Jim received the A.J. Hamilton award in 2012 as Volunteer of the Year for the state of Kentucky. He was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Olive Hill delivering meals faithfully regardless of weather conditions until his health prevented him from doing so. Jim was passionate about the service the Shriners’ Hospitals did in caring for children. His faith and his membership in the First Christian Church of Olive Hill where he was known as the “candy man” gave him great joy and comfort.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brother-in-law, Gladys Barker Stamper (Lloyd) and Jewell Barker Brown, and two nephews whom he regarded as brothers, Daryl Wayne Brown and Donald Ray Brown.

Jim is survived by his wife of 59 plus years, Wilma Jean Rogers Barker; four sisters-in-law, Bonnie Lou Rogers of Genoa, Nevada, Bettie Sue Rogers DeMaegt (Ted) of San Antonio, Texas, Joyce Ann Rogers Richardson (Cyrus) of Batavia, Ohio, and Teressa Dale Rogers of Edgewater, Florida; one brother-in-law, Willis Roscoe Rogers (Jennifer) of Olive Hill, Kentucky; and one niece-in-law, Debra Ann Brown (Donnie) of Olive Hill, Kentucky. In addition, he leaves behind beloved great nieces and nephews, Charity Rae Brown, Seth Brown, Ginger Brown Clay (David), Dara Lynn Brown Rose, Daryl Wayne Brown Jr. (Patty), Kimberly Jean DeMaegt Gustafson (Kevin), Cyrus B. Richardson III, Martha Ollijean Richardson Mende (Sam), Caroline Jean Rogers Logan, Joelle Messer Kiser (Greg), Kimberly Messer Sloan (David), James R. Masters and Roger Willis Masters. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2018, at the First Christian Church in Olive Hill, Kentucky, with David Carroll and Pastor Gary Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in the Olive Hill Memorial Park in Olive Hill, Kentucky.

Friends may visit from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the First Christian Church in Olive Hill. Jim will lie in state from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the church.

A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018, by the Olive Hill Masonic Lodge # 629.

Seth Brown, John Dixon, Steve Jennings, Roger Layne, Rick Porter, Rodger “Ike” Raybourn, Richard Tackett, and Blaine Webb will serve as pallbearers.
